SYNOPSIS: Annie returns to her estranged birthplace of Buenos Aires to undergo IVF treatments from the famed Dr. Cossi. But her motherhood journey brings to light the lives of two women lost to the Dirty War decades ago. Past and present intertwine as four women hunt down their destiny. A World Premiere debut by a powerful new voice, ¡VOS! is an exhilarating quest for justice, family, and home.
ANNIE / SOFIA: Latina, 30s-40s. ANNIE - (in 2015-2016) Born in Buenos Aires, emigrated when she was a baby and grew up in Louisiana not speaking Spanish at home. A lowly book editor. Married for a time but after several years of failed fertility treatments and the subsequent debt, her relationship ended in divorce. After climbing out of debt, Annie discovers her late mother owned an apartment in Palermo, a neighborhood in Buenos Aires. A friend encourages her to seek more affordable IVF treatment in Argentina, which brings Annie to Dr. Cossi. A people-pleaser raised in the south, Annie doesn't know who she is, even though deep down she knows she is a mother. SOFIA - (in 1975-1976) From Santa Cruz, El Chaltén in Patagonia. Sofia is shy, plain spoken, methodical and grew up a cowgirl on her father's cattle ranch. A new graduate student at the University of Buenos Aires studying fine arts. Sofia sculpts, does printmaking, and finds herself painting poster art for the campus Peronist Youth. She is drawn to Ana, a law student and assistant to charismatic Professor Concado, so much that Sofia's devotion obscures why she attended Peronist Youth to begin with. Sofia hides a secret, tied to her turbulent past, that threatens to blow her love for Ana wide open. Wears glasses.
DR. COSSI / ANA & Others: Latina, 40s-50s. DR. COSSI - (in 2015-2016) Born and raised in Palermo, a neighborhood in Buenos Aires. An OBGYN and Endocrinologist specializing in fertility. Intuitive, patient, wry, closed off about herself without making you feel like she's withholding anything. Unapologetically spiritual. Takes a special interest in women's health because of the fallout and lasting effects of the Dirty War, of which she's not keen to talk about. Cossi will tolerate North Americans et al seeking medical tourism to help make families complete. ANA - (in 1975-1976) Grew up dirt poor, eventually was married and had one daughter, Maca. After the divorce, her mother helped to raise her as Ana studied medicine on scholarship at the University of Buenos Aires. Confronted with the Ezeiza Massacre, Ana shifted her focus. She's currently in law school trying to be a criminal defense lawyer; until then she's just Professor Tmas Concado’s TA. Leads with her heart and wins every argument, so long as it's a fair fight. Quick to anger but more interested in empathy, Ana constantly berates herself for not measuring up as a mother and a student. Intrigued by Sofia's quiet strength.
